Four Fantastic Ways to Spread Some Neighbourly Cheer

The campaign to get us on friendly terms with people in our neighbourhood comes when over half of us have admitted to not knowing their neighbours’ names. And only 4 in 10 feel connected to their local community.

At Perfect Pads, we’re big on community and know the difference having good neighbours makes to people’s quality of life, not to mention their home’s value.

According to a survey from a building services company, most respondents (2,341 home seekers) said they’d be willing to pay 1% to 3% over the asking price to guarantee good neighbours.

With that in mind, we look at four ideas below about being a good neighbour.

  1. Keep noise to a minimum. But let’s face it, sometimes it’s impossible not to make a bit of noise if you’re having a party or carrying out building work. However, a quiet word or little note to your neighbours explaining the situation is only temporary goes a long way to keeping everyone happy.
  2. Parking etiquette. This is one of the main reasons neighbours fall out with each other. It’s wise to recognise you don’t have a legal (or God-given) right to park outside your home (of course, as long as it’s not an allocated parking area). And by parking sensibly, i.e. not taking up more space than you need, you’ll be seen as a thoughtful neighbour.
  3. Look out for others. It could be something as simple as putting the bin back for an elderly neighbour or letting the people opposite know they’ve left their car lights on. By showing you’re thinking of others, you highlight what it means to be a good neighbour.
  4. Get involved. The recent Platinum Jubilee street parties across the UK were a great way for neighbours to come together and get to know each other. So why not consider throwing a party and inviting your neighbours? Or get involved with the local Neighbourhood Watch? For those who are really committed to doing their bit for the community, perhaps consider organising a neighbourhood litter pick.

Whatever you’re doing to make your area a nicer place to live, we salute you.

We’ll leave you with this ancient Chinese proverb: “A good neighbour is a priceless treasure.”
